Trump Is Not the One Who Needs Defeating
It’s bigger than that. And it will take all of us to make it happen
The video clips of the shooting — I don’t watch.
The talk show hosts I’ve loved for years — I can’t watch.
The flood of hysterical texts, warning me that the end of the world is coming, should Trump win the election — I hit “Delete and Report Junk.”
Where is your engagement? you might say. Don’t you realize what’s at stake?
My engagement is fully hooked up. It’s just not hooked up to this. See, I don’t think that my $5, or $17, or $40 to “defeat Trump” will actually defeat him.
More important (and scarier to say):
I don’t think Trump is the one who needs defeating.
I mean, look. He’s a ‘hero’ now. A ‘martyr.’ And everything seems to be going his way. The Supreme Court decisions. Biden’s performance at the debate. And now Biden’s most unfortunate Covid diagnosis. Trump is riding a wave of good fortune that may or may not take him to the presidency. But even if he makes it there, that is not going to be our undoing.
What will be our undoing — what is already our undoing — is our desperate need to win.
