The “Feel Like It” Fairy Is Not Coming

How to do it anyway, when it’s the last thing you want.

You are never going to feel like it.

This is the encouraging news from Mel Robbins in her Ted Talk about how to stop screwing yourself over. She says, “The effort required to leave that warm bed and enter the world is the same amount of effort needed to shake up your life.”

And you’re never going to feel like it.

But Mel Robbins and James Clear, author of Atomic Habits: Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results, have very different methods, and I want to focus on the latter.

I know what I need to feel better.
I need to stop eating two helpings past where I’m comfortable.
I need to “exercise more.” If ever there was an exhausted phrase…
I need to meditate before starting my day.

Why don’t I do it?
Well, I never feel like it.
And built into this Not Feeling Like It is the magical thought that someday I will. But that day never comes.

Except it does — just often enough to poke me into action. It comes in January, for instance. For a week or so.
