My Phone and my Meditation Practice
My goal is to meditate, first thing every morning.
Doesn’t matter if I only sit for five minutes, but it matters that I sit.
And it matters that I do it first thing.
I learned the hard way why.
If I don’t do it first, I won’t do it at all. You’d think I’d have more control, or that I would just sit in the evening if I didn’t sit in the morning. But I don’t. Sneaky little ‘doings’ creep in under cover of “right after this,” — (I’ll make a cup of coffee, it won’t take a minute…or, I’ll just put these few dishes in the dishwasher…or, actually I’m kind of hungry so I’ll just make this quick breakfast and then…) The coffee leads to taking out the trash, and then I bring in the paper and while I’m reading, I check email and Urgent Things Need To Be Done. You get the picture.
It doesn’t end until I fall into bed at night.
And the most insidious, the most dangerous, the very worst thing I can do before sitting is check the weather on my phone. Ostensibly, it’s just to decide what to wear. But that’s the sheep’s clothing of my ‘intent.’ Underneath is a…
