“Brain Pickings”
First of all, for those of you who don’t know Maria Popova, now you at least know her name, so…you’re welcome. She is responsible for singlehandedly providing me with a rich ongoing education in literature, poetry, history, politics, philosophy, psychology and science.
She does this through her phenomenal newsletter, Brain Pickings, “a cultural treasure trove of the thoughts, letters, and life’s work of some of history’s greatest thinkers.”
For someone like me, that sounds just intimidating. Cool, worthy, but very intimidating. But here’s why I love Maria Popova. She makes it not only doable but…so fun.
Which is saying something. I’m a very slow reader and it’s not usually fun. I have to have something blocking all the lines under the one I’m reading. And sometimes I have to read aloud to figure out what the author is saying. So if you tell me about a newsletter covering literature, history, philosophy, etc., normally I would break out in hives and head for the nearest Netflix binge.
