Image Swimming is a term I invented for a series of literary meditations inspired by visual work — in this case, the work of Deborah Koff Chapin, creator of Soulcards. This image is from Deck 1. Please visit https://touchdrawing.com/ for more on this transformative process.

There are days when I wake up into a split second of nothing.

If I could catch myself right in that moment
and stay awake…

But I don’t.

My eyelids slide up.
The sluice gates open,
and an incessant flow of
me me me me me me me me
comes gushing outward into what I see.
And I point at it and mistake it for reality.

I generate it all and it becomes my day —
a movie made by a phenomenal team of actors,
make-up, costume and set designers,
cinematographers, and directors.
The ultimate cinema verité,
the whole day is my show…
written not by me, but
by all that I’ve ever
believed.
